FAQs

What do you believe in?

We believe in the power of us, for a world of good. As a community, we have the power to protect our planet from climate change and environmental degradation. We have the power to ensure the world is a safe, welcoming place for all children, everywhere. We have the power to stop bigotry and achieve equality, in spirit, law, and practice. We have the power to reform broken systems, build peace, and end poverty.  We have the power to analyze history, repair damage, and progress. We have the power of togetherness.

How did you come up with Girl Friday’s That Girl feature?

In my early 20s, I was obsessed with a late ‘60s show called That Girl. My mom showed me one episode and that was all it took! Staring Marlo Thomas, the show follows aspiring actor “Ann Marie” as she moves to New York to pursue her dreams. That Girl inspired my mom as a child and my hope is Girl Friday’s That Girl features inspire you, too! To me, the term That Girl means “someone who inspires and empowers.”

How often do you send The Friday Brief newsletter?

We send The Friday Brief once a week - we promise not to spam you with additional emails!

Do you provide your opinions or just articles and research?

I believe in careful research and use only credible source material, which I will happily cite for you in each newsletter, on this site, and on social media.

If information is ever proven to be incorrect, I will absolutely amend our original post and include an Editor’s Note. I will always let you know if I have an opinion on a subject. We can disagree and that is okay!

I do not want you guessing about perceived neutrality or possible subtext when I can simply be direct. For instance, I will never position climate change deniers as credible voices in environmental debates.

Is Girl Friday just for people who identify as girls or women?

Girl Friday is inclusive and for everyone. I got the idea for the name from His Girl Friday, a film with Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell. In the movie, Rosalind plays a savvy, underestimated investigative reporter. For me, the term Girl Friday means “someone who is curious and persistent.”  Anyone who wants to get into (to quote the great John Lewis) “good and necessary trouble” is welcome to join us.

I am not in a position to donate to causes. Is this a space for me?

Girl Friday is for anyone who believes in the importance of social awareness. Not all “help” comes in the form of donations. Sometimes what is needed is to elevate experts’ voices on social media, contact local politicians, or even march. Whenever possible, I will offer a few options on how you can consider lending your time and/or resources to assist.

How do you select the organizations featured in the newsletter and on social media?

I vet every organization I volunteer with, donate to, or support in any form. Vetting organizations from the outside is not perfect, but I do my level best.

I go through organizations’ publicly accessible IRS and financial forms, checking everything from CEOs salaries to program expenses, before even considering recommending that friends lend their support.

I look at Charity Navigator, Guidestar, and any available reviews (including Glassdoor notes from actual staffers) and critiques of the organization’s work. If I have even a hint of a question, I will table them for further review.
