A few of our favorite things
We’re twirling like Julie Andrews on an Austrian hilltop (minus the incredible singing) just thinking about a few of our favorite things from this month.
Have questions, comments, or suggestions? Say hello@deargirlfriday.com.
WEEK 7: February 9 - 15
Your eyes do not deceive you. We did, in fact, skip Week 6, and we’ll be starting fresh with monthly favorites in March.
The Superbowl is this week’s favorite thing. The whole thing. Jalen Hurts (swoon) winning; Donald Trump being booed across the stadium (hello solidarity); Ledisi singing Lift Every Voice; Kendrick Lamar’s incredible, symbolic halftime performance with SZA. Despite knowing very little about football, we loved the whole thing. The revolution will be televised.
WEEK 5: January 26 - February 1
Are we finally done with January? Is that really happening?
With the insanity of confirmation hearings and the tragic air collision in Washington, DC, we had only one favorite thing this week. A necessary reminder of a famous quote by Toni Morrison:
“The very serious function of racism is a distraction. It keeps you from doing your work. It keeps you explaining over and over again, your reason for being.”
WEEK 4: January 19 - 25
This was a BLEAK WEEK in U.S. news, so at times we had to tune out the noise and check in with our favorite shows.
We binge watched ALL of season 3 of Young, Famous & African on Netflix this week. Swanky, Annie, Zari the Boss Lady, Diamond… we were riveted from one drama to the next. But, unlike some similar reality shows, it is heartening to see this cast seems to genuinely love each other.
Prime Target (starring Leo Woodall - swoooooon) is absolutely our new favorite thriller. It’s airing on Apple TV+ and is definitely worth checking out after you catch up on our other favorite Apple offering, Severance.
WEEK 3: January 12 - 18
Traitors is BACK! We had the most incredible opportunity last April. We met the UK team behind the show at Selwyn College at the University of Cambridge. Team Girl Friday is the SUPERfandom of Traitors in the U.S., so needless to say, we are hooked on this show and hope for 10,000 more seasons.
One of our favorite Bravo shows Southern Charm, is also back in action. We hope that Venita Aspen - who is fabulously entertaining - gets more airtime or even a spinoff show about her incredible content creation. She is one of our favorite tastemakers on Instagram.
WEEK 2: January 5 - 11
The Golden Globes were filled with glamorous fashion moments and moving speeches. We were particularly moved by Demi Moore’s big win - her first! - and her speech celebrating “her wholeness” and the “gift of doing something I love.”
We cannot get enough of following Katie Gatti Tassin, better known as Money with Katie, on Instagram. Her insights on the connections between personal finances, politics, and society are always spot-on and timely. We look forward to reading her book when it debuts this summer!
WEEK 1: January 1 - 4
Happy New Year, and welcome to the first Girl Friday Favorite Things rundown!
We’re still obsessed with Kendrick Lamar’s GNX. This masterpiece spotlights Lamar’s piercing lyrics and timely cultural analysis. We’ve had “Wacced Out Murals” on repeat for weeks, and don’t see that changing anytime soon.
Hayden Kristal is a comedian and, in her words, “the world’s most tolerable horse girl (probably.” We love her hilarious farm videos and cannot pick a favorite animal. Still, we must admit having soft spots for a spunky horse named Chicken Elizabeth Nugget and an absolute menace of a donkey called Dexter.
While we love all of Brit Marling’s works, The OA has a special place in our hearts. We hope that Netflix hears fans’ pleas to bring it back for (at least!) a third installation. The OA is a rare and necessary magic that must be experienced.
