These are the guiding principles for the Girl Friday community. As we discuss pressing issues within our community, we will absolutely have different opinions. That is a good thing! We learn, grow, and stretch our imaginations by sharing our experiences, challenging our viewpoints, and expanding our sources of knowledge. When we chat with each other on social media or engage external parties about issues we’re deeply concerned about, let’s keep these four principles in mind so we always have That Friday Feeling:

  • To lead is to serve. While leading the charge on issues dear to your heart, remember that leaders serve their communities. Approach your advocacy with the understanding that you are serving the greater good.

  • Connection transcends difference. What connects us will always be stronger than what divides us. Beyond every border and on the other side of every perceived difference, there’s a person with a heart waiting for a connection.

  • Healthy debates are well-informed. Emotion can be hard to channel in conversations with strangers, especially online. Ground your passion in facts and credible sources. Always assume good intent from everyone else. This isn’t to say that everyone is always well-intentioned, but we’ll start with that assumption.

  • The sun will rise. You missed a fundraiser, you didn’t finish a book you wanted to discuss, and you aren’t able to attend a march this weekend. That is perfectly okay! The Girl Friday community isn’t a social good to-do list. Do what you can, when you can. Listen to your heart and body, and remember that tomorrow is a new day.
