A Moment of Unity Sows Discord Among NFL Fans

The National Football League kicked off their 2020 Season Thursday, September 10th with the Kansas City Chiefs taking on the Houston Texans. The highly anticipated start to the season began differently this year with two National anthems being honored before the game. The Star-Spangled Banner and “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” which is commonly referred to as the “Black National Anthem,” were performed prior to kick off. The Houston Texans chose to remain in the locker room during both anthems, while the Kansas City Chiefs linked arms during Lift Every Voice and Sing.
In a moment of unity, both teams came together with their coaches and staff for a moment of silence, acknowledging the racial and social injustices happening in our society. While there were a limited number of fans in attendance, boos could be heard throughout the stadium during that rare moment of unity. Despite the negative reaction from some of their fans, the NFL has remained adamant about their long-term commitment to social justice and their continued initiatives.
In addition to working directly with players and owners, the NFL added signage “It Takes All of Us” and “End Racism” to the end zones for their first week of games. Lastly, throughout the season players will be allowed to wear decals on their helmets honoring victims of systemic racism. While many have criticized the League for being behind on the social justice front, we look forward to the NFL’s continued use of their national platform to further the crucial dialogue on these important issues.
